Wrongful Termination Archives

Can you be fired for reporting sexual harassment?

You're proud of the work you do. You're a professional, hardworking woman, and you take your job and career seriously. Unfortunately, for far too many women in technology and science fields, among others, sexual harassment is a daily part of their work experience. The law protects you from this kind of hostile work environment. However, you may not want to make a report, fearing reprisal from your employer or damage to your career. If you are being mistreated at work, joked about, or otherwise harassed because of your gender, it's critical to take certain steps to protect yourself.

Wrongful terminations and your rights as an employee

When you're in an at-will employment relationship, it means that your employer can choose to terminate your position at any time without advanced notice. Your employer can also choose to give you advanced notice, but this isn't required, just as he doesn't need to provide you with a reason for the termination.

Your employer can't fire you for these protected reasons

When you start at a new job, you know that your state is an at-will employer. It means that you could be let go at any time and without a reason. What happens if the reason you're let go is more personal than that, though? What if it's because of a disability, your sex, your gender or some other perceived issue?

2 men blow whistle on inflated claims costing government

Whistleblowers are protected by law and in many cases, they can be awarded compensation for settlements arranged as a result of their reports. If you're fired for reporting fraud to the government, your job is actually protected; you should be able to make a claim against your company for wrongful termination.

Age discrimination in the workplace

If you're an older or even a very young worker, you need to understand what age discrimination is. Age discrimination is discrimination that is strictly based on your age, not your abilities. For instance, if you apply to be a teller at a bank at age 21 with the same skills as someone who is 41, you shouldn't be turned away because you're younger.

Volkswagen employee files a wrongful termination lawsuit

If you see something wrong happening at work, you generally have the right to speak up and do something about it. You're protected, as an employee, from being retaliated against for being a whistleblower, and if you are terminated because of it, you have the right to file a lawsuit against the company.
